PART A: READING
I. AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON
1. Language focus: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- know more about competitions
- develop reading skills: reading for main ideas and specific information,
guessing the meaning of the words
2. Skills: Reading + Listening/Writing/Speaking
3. Attitudes: Ss are eager to read the reading passage and do the tasks
II. PREPARATION
1. Teacher: - Teaching aids: Lesson plan, text book
- Teaching method: Communicative language teaching
2. Students: - Read Unit 6 – reading at home
III. PROCEDURE:
1. Class organization (1 minute)
2. Check – up (5 minutes) - Some Ss go to the board, read out their letter
3. New lesson (35 minutes)
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES
1. Pre – reading
- Ask sts to work in pairs, match the
pictures with activities.
- Give correct answers:
a. Quiz “Road to Mount Olympia”
b. London Marathon
c. Sao Mai Television Singing Contest
d. Olympics Games
- Ask sts to work in pairs, take turn ask
and answer about competitions at
schools and in the society.
- Give feedback and introduce the topic
of the lesson
- Work in pairs and do the task
- Note down
- Ask and answer
- Listen to the teacher
2. While reading
- Ask students to read the passage
silently to understand the main ideas.
Task 1:
- Ask students to do Task 1 then
compare the answer with a partner.
- Call on some students to read the
answers
- Checks and gives correct answers:
Task 2
- Ask sts ro work in pairs, ask and
answer about the reading passage.
- Go around the class to give help if
necessary
- Call on some pairs to ask and answer
in front of the class.
- Give feedback and correct answers
- Read the text silently once or two times.
- Work individually to do task 1
- Compare the answers
- Read aloud their answers
- Write down the correct answers

1. The representatives of three classes of the school took
part in the annual final English Competition last
Saturday.
2. Its aim was to stimulate the spirit of learning English
among students.
3. The Student’s Parents Society sponsored the
competition.
4. They had to complete five activities in all. On
Task 3
- Ask sts to work individually and
complete the sentences.
- Call on some students to read the
answers
- Checks and gives correct answers:
completion of each activity, they had to answer the
questions in the worksheets within two minutes.
5. They had to observe and score the student’s
performance. The maximum score for each activity was
15. At the end of the competition they would announce
the total score of each group. The group that got the
highest score would be the winner.
6. The winner would be awarded a set of CDs for
studying English and an Oxford Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary.

1. In Activity 5, Hung was unable to recite the poem (He
could not remember the last sentence)
2. Having achieved the highest score, Group B became
the winner of the competition.
3. Group C lost the game because they just got 60 points
4. Nga encouraged her group by saying “For me the
most important thing was our participation in the
competition and the enjoyment we had from it”
3. Post – reading
- Ask sts to work in groups, translating
the poem into Vietnamese
- Ask some students to read aloud in
front of the class.
- Give feedback
- Work in groups
