Lesson 3: Read
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Aim: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Standard: Read and understand the text about some wonders of the
world and complete the sentences by doing multiple choice exercise,
completing the table of the country where wonders of the world are.
- Higher: Know about World Heritage Sites in Viet Nam recognized
by UNESCO.
2. Knowledge:
+ Vocabulary: ancient (a); (to) compile; (to) honor; religious (a); royal (a)
+ Structures: - Past simple tense
- Passive voice
+ Pronunciation:
3. Skills: Listening, reading, speaking and writing.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher: Lesson plan, text book, projector, posters, pictures, cards.
2. Students:
+ The Classic Seven Wonders of the World.
+ The New Seven Wonders of the World.
+ The World Heritage Sites in Viet Nam recognized by UNESCO.
+ Read the text on page 134.
III. PPROCEDURE:
1. Warm up: (4’) Matching
- Gives out six pictures and seven Wonders of the World then asks Ss to
match the names with the pictures.
a) Pyramid of Cheops b) Hanging Gaderns
of Babylon
f) Great Wall
d) Taj Mahal e) Angkor Wat g) Statue of Zeus
c) Golden Gate Bridge
- Calls on some Ss to give out their answer.
- Gets comments and gives correct answer.
* Answer key:
1- b; 2-g; 3-c; 4-f; 5-d; 6-e.
2. New lesson:
- Lead in the lesson: (1’)
T: + Which place is it? (Angkor Wat)
+ What do you know about Angkor Wat?
Ss: Answer.
T: In this lesson, we are going to read and understand a
text about some wonders of the world, especially Angkor
Wat.
Teacher’s activities Students’ activities
I. Pre-reading:
Act.1: Vocabulary (8’)
- Elicits the words first, says out then instructs
Ss to read the words.
- Writes and checks the words.
+ Ancient (a) (Picture)
+ (To) compile (Situation)
+ (To) honor (Translation)
+ Religious (a) (Question-Part of speech)
+ Royal (a) (Picture)
* Checking vocabulary: Matching
- Asks Ss to go to the board and match the
words with their Vietnamese meaning. (Use
cards)
- Try to give them out and repeat
chorally- individually.
- Copy down and give the meaning,
stress.
- Match the words with their
Vietnamese meaning.

- Gets comments and corrects.
Act.2: Presentation text (7’)
- Introduces the text and asks Ss to listen to the
tape twice to answer the questions:
a) How many wonders of the world are there in
the text?
b) What are they?
- Gets feedback from Ss.
- Gives correct answer.
II. While-reading:
Act.1: Multiple choice (9’)
- Divides the class into five or six groups. Asks
them to read the text again within 3 minutes and
complete the sentences by doing multiple
choice exercise on page 134.
- Guides Ss to play the game: Each group has
four cards written A, B, C or D. Teacher shows
the sentences on the screen, within 10 seconds
Ss discuss and raise their answer. With each
correct answer, the group will have 10 marks.
After 4 questions, the group having more marks
will be the winner.
- Asks Ss to explain their answer.
- Comments and corrects.
Act.2: Complete the table (6’)
- Asks Ss to read the text again and complete
the table.
- Calls on some Ss go to the board and write the
answer on the screen.
- Gets comments from Ss.
- Gives correct answer.
- Give comments and correct.
- Listen to the tape while reading
the text, then answer the questions
individually.
- Give out their answer.
- Listen to teacher.
* Answer:
a) There are six.
b) They are the Hanging Gardens
of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus, the
Pyramid of Cheops, the Great
Wall, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat.
- Work in groups to read the text
and exchange their answer.
- Listen to teacher’s guides and
play the game.
- Explain their answer.
- Listen to teacher.

- Work individually.
- Write the answer on the screen.
- Give comments on their friends’
answer.
- Listen to teacher and correct.
III. Post-reading: (8’)
* Actual connection:
- Asks Ss to discuss in groups to find out The
World Heritage Sites in Viet Nam recognized
by UNESCO and write on the posters within 3
minutes.
- Collects Ss’ answer and corrects before class.
- Introduces 8 World Heritage Sites in Viet
Nam recognized by UNESCO.

- Discuss in groups and write their
answer on the posters.
- Give comments.

IV. HOMEWORK: (2’)
- Learn by heart the vocabulary of the lesson.
- Prepare for Unit 14 - Lesson 4: Write
+ Read the letter on page 135 and complete it.
+ Write a letter to a friend to tell him/her about a place you have visited
recently, using the given prompts on page 135.
