Lesson 3: Read
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Aim: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to read and understand the
postcards about Mrs. Quyen’s vacation in the USA
- Standard: Read and fill in the table and answer the questions.
- Higher: Retell the Mrs. Quyen’s itinerary.
2. Knowledge:
+ Vocabulary: volcano (n); lava (n); to pour out; wharf (n); valley (n); wine-
growing (n); prison (n); carve (v); situate (v).
+ Structures: past simple tense
3. Skills: Speaking and Listening.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher: Lesson plan, text book, cassette, tape, pictures on page 116-117.
2. Students:
+ Vocabulary: volcano (n); lava (n); to pour out; wharf (n); valley (n); wine-
growing (n); prison (n); carve (v); situate (v).
+ Structures: past simple tense
III. PPROCEDURE:
1. Warm up: (5’) Guessing
- T asks: Do you remember Mrs. Quyen?
What plan did she have?
- T introduces the lesson and asks Ss to look at the pictures and guess which
places she visited.
- T calls some Ss to give the answer.
2. New lesson:

I. Pre-reading: (12’)
1. Vocabulary:
- Elicit the words first, says out then instruct Ss to read
the words.
- Write and check the words.

* Checking vocabulary: Slap the board
- Try to give them out and repeat
chorally- individually.
- Copy down and give the
meaning, stress.
- Two students go to the board to
slap the meaning of Vietnamese
words they hear. The student
slapping more words is winner.
2. Presentation text:
- Play the tape for Ss to read and ask them to tell which
places she visited.
* Answer: Hawaii, New York, Chicago, Mount
Rushmore, San Francisco.
II. While - reading: (18’)
1. Fill in the table:
- T guides Ss to do the exercise.
- T asks Ss to read the post cards carefully and do the
task.
- T asks Ss to correct the answers with their friends
- T calls some Ss to give the answer.
- T comments
and gives correct answer.
2. Answer the questions.
- T asks Ss to read the postcards again to answer the
questions.
- T calls some pairs to give the answer.
- T comments and gives the correction.
* Answer key:
a. She went there by plane.
b. She saw the famous prison on the island of
Alcatraz.
c. On Mount Rushmore ,there are the heads of
American Presidents carved into the rocks.
d. It’s “The Windy City”
e. She was shopping while her husband was visiting
the Statue of Liberty.
III. Post – Reading: (8’)
- T calls some Ss to read aloud the postcards.
- Listen to and read the postcards
then answer.
- Listen to teacher.
- Read the post cards carefully and
do the task.
- Compare the answer with a
friend.
- Give the answer
- Listen and write down.
- Work individually.
- Read aloud the answer before
class.
- Write down.
- Some Ss read aloud the
postcards.
- Listen and correct.
- Answer T’s questions.
