Lesson 5: Language focus
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Aim: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to use:
- The passive forms in the past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” and “whether”
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
2. Knowledge:
+ Structures: Passive forms; Reported yes-no questions; Question word +
to-infinitive; Verb + to-infinitive.
3. Skills: Reading, speaking and writing.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher: Lesson plan, text book, projector, posters.
2. Students:
- The passive form of past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” and “whether”
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
III. PPROCEDURE:
1. Warm-up: (5 mins)
- Rewrite the following sentences using the given cues:
a) They completed Sydney Opera House in 1973. (Passive form)
-> Sydney Opera House………………………………………….
b) Nga asked me: “Is Phong Nha Cave in southern Viet Nam?” (Reported
speech)
-> Nga asked me…………………………………………………
- Lead in the lesson.
2. New lesson:
Teacher’s activities Students’ activities
Act.1: Passive form of past simple tense
(10 mins)
- Ask Ss to retell the way to change the
active form of past simple tense into
passive form.
- Consolidate the form of passive form of
past simple tense.
Ex: Sydney Opera House was completed
in 1973.
* Form: S + was/were + p.p
- Have Ss use the given words in brackets
to complete the sentences, using passive
form of past simple tense.
- Answer teacher’s question.
- Listen to teacher and write down.
- Work individually to do the exercise
then compare the answer in pairs.
