Lesson 5: Language focus
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Aim: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to use:
- The passive forms in the past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” andwhether
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
2. Knowledge:
+ Structures: Passive forms; Reported yes-no questions; Question word +
to-infinitive; Verb + to-infinitive.
3. Skills: Reading, speaking and writing.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher: Lesson plan, text book, projector, posters.
2. Students:
- The passive form of past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” andwhether
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
III. PPROCEDURE:
1. Warm-up: (5 mins)
- Rewrite the following sentences using the given cues:
a) They completed Sydney Opera House in 1973. (Passive form)
-> Sydney Opera House………………………………………….
b) Nga asked me: “Is Phong Nha Cave in southern Viet Nam?” (Reported
speech)
-> Nga asked me…………………………………………………
- Lead in the lesson.
2. New lesson:
Teacher’s activities Students’ activities
Act.1: Passive form of past simple tense
(10 mins)
- Ask Ss to retell the way to change the
active form of past simple tense into
passive form.
- Consolidate the form of passive form of
past simple tense.
Ex: Sydney Opera House was completed
in 1973.
* Form: S + was/were + p.p
- Have Ss use the given words in brackets
to complete the sentences, using passive
form of past simple tense.
- Answer teacher’s question.
- Listen to teacher and write down.
- Work individually to do the exercise
then compare the answer in pairs.
- Calls on some Ss to read aloud their
answer.
- Get comments from Ss.
- Give correct answer.
* Answer:
a) was constructed
b) was designed
c) was reached
Act.2: Indirect questions with if and
whether (10 mins)
- Use the example to elicits the way to
change a yes-no question into an indirect
question.
Ex: a) Nga asked me: “Is Phong Nha Cave
in southern Viet Nam?”
-> Nga asked me if/whether Phong Nha
Cave was in southern Viet Nam.
b) Nhi asked Nga: “Do you know My Son,
Nga?”
-> Nhi asked Nga if/whether she knew My
Son.
- Consolidate the knowledge.
- Ask Ss to do Language focus 2 (sentence
b,c,d).
- Calls on some Ss to read aloud their
answer.
- Gets comments and correct.
* Answer:
a) Nhi asked Nga if/whether it was far
from Ha Noi.
b) Nhi asked Nga if/whether My Son was
in Quang Nam province.
c) Nhi asked Nga if/whether many people
lived at My Son.
- Give answer.
- Give comments on their friends’
answer.
- Listen and correct.
- Listen to teacher and answer.
Suggested answer: When we change a
direct yes-no question into an indirect
question, we must change the question
into affirmative sentence, then follow
the rules of changing an affirmative
sentence into a reported speech.
- Listen to teacher.
- Work individually to do the exercise
then compare the answer in pairs.
- Read aloud their answer.
- Give comments and correct.

- Ask Ss to look at the examples and elicits
the use of to-infinitive and bare-infinitive.

c) I can swim.
- Consolidate the knowledge.

- Try + to-inf: cố gắng
- Try + V-ing: thử
- Stop + to-inf: dừng lại để làm gì.
- Stop + V-ing: dừng việc gì lại, bỏ.
- Modal verbs (can, may,…) + bare-inf.
- Ask Ss to do the exercise.
- Get feedback from Ss.
- Give correct answer.
- Answer teacher’s questions.

IV. HOMEWORK: (2’)
- Learn by heart all the structures in the lessons and give some examples
with them.
- Redo the exercises in their notebooks.
- Do the exercise 2 - 6 in the workbook.
- Revise the knowledge from unit 12 to unit 14.
Each sentence has one mistake, find out and correct it:
a) The Statue of Liberty were presented to the United States by France in 1876.
b) Nhi asked Nga if you want to visit My Son one day.
c) Nga advised Nhi how going from My Son to Hoi An.
d) They decided tell the truth.
